How to use the FUSS online calendar

For some years now the FUSS calendar has been printed as a full page insert included in each published Circles. This is a handy one page view of everything happening in the current month. As times have changed, there are more and more events, producing a printed document that is quite dense with text. In order for everything to fit, the text must get smaller and therefore more difficult to read. When simply transferred to an online document, this density results in a screen view that is hard to read. These notes are intended to offer some hints that will help you to read what you want to read on the FUSS online calendar. The notes are written for those using Internet Explorer and Windows, although Mac users may also find some of the suggestions useful.

In your browser:

When you click “Calendar” in the left-side navigational panel, you get a view of the current month’s FUSS calendar as maintained on Google by the FUSS administrator. To fit on most screens and to fit in the FUSS website template, this view may be somewhat restricted. It also may lose some items because they don’t fit in the space allotted. Finally, the text may too small for readability.

To make this calendar more usable:

Near the top of the calendar box are two tabs, labeled “Month” and “Agenda”. Normally the calendar is presented in the “Month” view. By clicking on “Agenda”, the view changes to display the calendar entries for the current day, as well as the next week or so. The coverage is reduced to about a week instead of an entire month. However, in exchange, all the entries are complete for the days presented and they are much easier to read. This works well also for Mac/Safari users.

The scroll bar allows you to move further into the future, but still seeing only about a week at a time, in legible text.

The small triangular pointers next to the “Today” button take you backward or forward one month.

For Google calendar users:

If you have a free Google account, you can also access the FUSS calendar directly in Google Calendars. This gives you a complete online view of the calendar if your screen is large enough, and may be an improvement if you are comfortable with Google calendars.

Using Adobe Reader:

Another view of the current month’s FUSS calendar is available in the online Circles newsletter. Each time Circles is published (usually every two weeks), the current month’s calendar is included. Since Circles is viewable online in the PDF format, the calendar page from Circles is also viewable that way. Mac/Safari users can apply these ideas as well, substituting “Preview” for “Adobe Reader” (although the “loupe” tool is not available in Preview).

The latest version (version 8) of Adobe Reader offers some improved tools to help with viewing dense documents such as the FUSS calendar. Follow the link for “Get Adobe Reader” on the Read Circles Online page (http://fussonline.org/CirclesOnline/ReadCircles.shtml ) if you need to update your Adobe Reader to the latest version.

On the Read Circles Online page if you click on the highlighted link for the latest Circles, your browser will display the PDF file using a version of Adobe Reader that is automatically invoked within the browser. If instead you click the right mouse button on the same link, a “context menu” appears that offers the option to “save target as…” By choosing this option and saving the Circles PDF file on your local computer, you can then open the PDF in Adobe Reader without the intervention of a browser. It turns out that Adobe Reader version 8 offers better viewing options if you do this. It is easy to just save the Circles PDF file on your desktop and then later you can delete it.

Once you have saved the Circles PDF, if you double-click its icon, Adobe Reader will start up and display the newsletter on your screen. Using the arrow keys Arrow keys you can page forward to the page containing the calendar. You will discover that the month’s calendar will all be visible, but the print will be too small to read. Here is where Adobe Reader’s tools come in handy.

Next to the arrow keys in the toolbar are the zoom keys: Zoom keys. You can click on the “+” zoom key to view less and less of the calendar, but with larger and larger type so that it is quite readable. Of course you will only be able to see a small portion of the calendar. By selecting the “Hand” tool from the “Tools” menu, (or just by holding the space bar while clicking and dragging with the mouse) you can move around on the page to see different areas. But Adobe Reader offers another clever tool that you may prefer: the “loupe” tool. To make the “loupe” available, you need to right-click on the zoom tools: either Zoom plus key  or Zoom minus key , and select “loupe” from the resulting drop-down list. That will make the “loupe” visible in the toolbar Loupe icon  (you only need to do this once – it will remain visible from then on until you remove it). Now click the loupe tool to select it. Then you can use this tool to magnify any portion of the calendar (like today’s listings) while still viewing the whole month (at a suitable magnification to see the whole month). You can adjust the field of view of the loupe tool, as well as its magnification. Experiment to see what works best for you on your screen.

Printing the calendar:

With the calendar page open in Adobe Reader – either the local copy downloaded to your computer or the one on the website within the browser, you can print that page on your printer. In either case, choose “Print” from the “File” menu and be careful to select only the calendar page – unless you want to print the entire issue of Circles, which you can certainly do if you want to. The items on the printed calendar will be in small fonts in order to fit everything in.
